Flue liners
01
316 or 904 grade
316 grade suits dry wood burnt properly. 904 is the heavier grade for smokeless fuel and harder use, and it carries a longer warranty.
02
Insulated as it goes
Backfilling with vermiculite or wrapping the liner keeps the flue gases warm, which improves the draw and reduces tar.
03
Sized to the appliance
An oversized liner cools the gases and causes condensation. We size the liner to the stove, not to the hole in the wall.

When a liner is needed
A liner is required where the existing flue is damaged, oversized, leaking between floors, or simply too rough for a modern stove to work well. In practice we line the majority of the chimneys we survey in this county.
The work involves lifting a pot, dropping the liner from the roof, connecting at the stove with a proper register plate and finishing with a cowl to keep out rain and birds.
Everything is pressure and smoke tested afterwards, and the installation is registered with HETAS so you receive a certificate for your records and your insurer.

- How long does a flue liner last?
- A 316 liner burnt on dry wood typically lasts fifteen years or more. Wet wood or the wrong fuel can destroy one in a couple of seasons.
- Does lining a chimney need scaffolding?
- Not usually. Most houses are handled from a roof ladder, and we will tell you at survey if access means anything more.
- Can I line the chimney myself?
- You can buy the parts from us supply only, but unless you are HETAS registered the installation must be signed off by building control.
